Is Time Slipping Away From You?

From time-to-time we all feel like time is just slipping through our fingers.  There always seem to be more tasks than time and after a while we can feel like we will never get caught up.  When time is not managed one always seems to feel disorganized or "off".

When I work with people on time management projects, I often hear that the biggest problem that they have is just too many things to do and not enough time. Although for some people that can be very true, I find that many people really aren't aware of just exactly how there time is being spent each day.  Oh sure we know that we spend eight hours in at work, or one hour working out or thirty minutes taking the kids to school, but in the midst of all that there are little pockets of time that we all waste unwittingly.

Sure you are at work 8 hours, but how much time do you spend on the phone surfing online, checking facebook or staring into space.  Some of those additional activities cause us to have to work a little longer and then steal time from our personal lives.

Before beginning to think about time management, I often suggest that my clients take a week and pay close attention to how their time is spent.  In any given day, I ask them to keep a journal write down their activities.  Don't change anything they normally do each day, just write down every time they change tasks and how long the last task took.  It is amazing the insight one gains from this exercise.

So before you declare that you need a 28 hour day, why not start a time journal for the next 7 days and decide how your spending your time each day.  Since we are all given the same 24 hours each day it is probably a good idea to assess how we spend that precious time.  You might be pleasantly surprised to find some pockets of time that you could actually use to relax!
